The role

Vault Consulting provides top quality outsourced accounting, outsourced HR and full-service research programs to nonprofits. At Vault, core values are not just to splash on a website! We strive to find folks that not only believe in what we do but stand by our values of Flexibility, Accountability, Collaboration, Appreciation and Drive for Excellence!

We are seeking a Controller with at least 5 years of experience. This position predominantly includes review of month-end close work, financial statement preparation, and interactions with nonprofit clients. This position may onboard new clients, which could entail reconciliations or evaluation and updating processes and procedures. We work hard to ensure you get the proper amount of onboarding, professional development, and continuous training you need to keep up with industry best practices. You will be bringing your expertise to our clients as a consultant, but you are a full-time, benefited employee at Vault!

What you’ll do:

Provide outsourced accounting services for multiple nonprofit clients, including:

Day-to-day oversight of the finance function, including managing and developing the accounting team

Review of month-end close and production of financial statements

Grant accounting, including federal and non-federal grants

Support for the annual audit and Form 990 cycle

Main point of contact for clients, external vendors, and banking/finance institutions

Onboarding new clients

Who you are:

Confident communicator: You convey value clearly and demonstrate strong trust in your skills and expertise.

Passionate: You strive to become a trusted advisor and team member on multiple client engagements.

Detail-oriented: You have a proven track record of ensuring accuracy, consistency, and thoroughness in all tasks.

Team builder: You own client outcomes, lead by example, and coach others to succeed.

Adaptable: You’re comfortable thriving in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

Solutions-oriented: You have a bias for action and don't give up easily.

Pro-active: You are self-motivated, consistently taking initiative and driving projects forward with minimal direction.

Who we are:

We believe in providing strong accounting, human resources services, survey research and market research to our clients to help support their missions. We take pride in what we do every day.

Collaboration is not just a word at Vault – it’s something we do every day.

Developing our people is a top priority.

Do we offer full-time remote work? We are open to consideration to those applicants who are not in the immediate D.C. area. So do not let location get in the way of applying. However, there would be potential expectations to come to our McLean, VA headquarters for occasional meetings and training/events.

The Legal Stuff:

We are an EEO employer. We do not discriminate based on any legal protected classes (federal or state) and encourage all qualified candidates to apply. We do conduct pre-employment background checks.  If you ever have questions about an open position, concerns or need additional information, please reach out to careers@vaultconsulting.com. We also encourage feedback on our recruitment process.

Requirements

A seasoned professional with a blend of at least five years of experience in public accounting, auditing, corporate or non-profit accounting roles

Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or license in progress preferred

Not-for-profit industry experience preferred

Familiarity with multiple commercial accounting software packages including Sage Intacct and QuickBooks is preferred

Excellent Excel and MS Office skills

Passion and commitment to providing quality client service and guidance

Strong analytical/problem solving skills and attention to detail

Benefits

As an employee at Vault, you will have the chance to be involved in engaging work while advancing the missions of the organizations we support, but also have fun while doing it. You will not only have a great benefits package, but the opportunity to learn and grow through Vault U, peer-to-peer resources and Lunch’n’Learns. In addition, for those earning a CPA, we provide you the tools and incentive to get it done! Plus we get together each year for a company retreat.
