About The Role
Dementia Adviser | Hounslow | 26 hours per week | Between Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm | £18,862.46 to £20,391.43 per annum | Fixed term until the end of March 2027, with potential to extend subject to contract funding
Every person’s experience of dementia is different. Sometimes, having someone who takes the time to listen, understand what matters and help make sense of the support available can make a real difference.
As a Dementia Adviser in Hounslow, you’ll be there for people affected by dementia when they need information, guidance and support. You’ll listen to what is happening in their lives, help them understand their options and share information in a way that feels clear, relevant and manageable.
You don’t need previous experience of working in dementia, healthcare or social care to apply. We’re much more interested in the skills and qualities you can bring. If you’re a thoughtful listener, communicate with warmth and confidence and enjoy learning so that you can help others, you could be a great fit for this role.
This is a primarily home based role , supporting people across Hounslow. You’ll also spend time travelling into and around the borough for home visits, groups and events. Travel isn’t expected every day and may typically be around once or twice a week depending on the needs of the service.
You’ll be joining a small, busy and supportive team that works well together . The Hounslow team includes three Dementia Adviser posts, including this role, and a Group Coordinator. It’s an active and varied service, combining home working with opportunities to meet and support people in their homes and out in the community.
No two conversations will be exactly the same. You might be listening to someone to understand what matters to them, explaining different options and strategies, sharing information about dementia and available support, visiting someone at home or connecting with people through local groups and events. You’ll need to feel comfortable communicating one-to-one and, at times, with small groups.
You won’t be expected to know everything about dementia from day one. What’s important is your ability and willingness to learn, take in new information and share it with people in a way that helps them understand their choices and decide what feels right for them.
Hounslow is an ethnically diverse borough, and we want our services to feel welcoming and accessible to the communities we support. Community language skills are particularly valuable for this role, including Punjabi and other South Asian languages. We particularly welcome applications from people who can bring an understanding of the different cultures and communities we work alongside. If you speak an additional language, we’d really like to hear about it in your application.
About you
There isn’t just one type of person who makes a great Dementia Adviser, and your skills may have developed through work, volunteering or other parts of your life.
You could thrive in this role if you:
Listen with empathy and take the time to understand what someone really needs.
Communicate clearly and confidently , helping people understand information, options and strategies without making things feel overwhelming.
Feel comfortable talking with people one-to-one and in small groups .
Are curious and willing to learn about dementia and different support options , and can turn that knowledge into useful, accessible information for others.
Are confident using IT , including recording information on databases.
Can work independently from home while also travelling into and around Hounslow for home visits, groups and community events when needed.
Communicate sensitively with people from different backgrounds and understand the importance of cultural awareness when supporting individuals and families.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who connects well with people and wants their work to make a difference.
You don’t need to tick every box or have done this exact role before. If you recognise yourself in what we’ve described and feel you have skills you could bring, we’d encourage you to apply.
The role is 26 hours per week , to be worked between Monday and Friday. There is flexibility around the working pattern, although Kate Sergeant indicated that Monday is a day the service would ideally need covered.
This position is fixed term until the end of March 2027, with the potential to extend depending on future contract funding .
Interviews are provisionally planned for the week commencing 2 November 2026 and are expected to take place via Microsoft Teams.
About Alzheimer's Society
Dementia is the UK's biggest killer. One in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia in their lifetime.
At Alzheimer's Society, we're the UK's leading dementia charity and the only one to tackle all aspects of dementia by giving help and hope to people living with dementia today and in the future. We give vital support to people facing the most frightening times of their lives, while also funding groundbreaking research and campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be.
Together with our supporters, we're working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.
Our values make sure that our focus is clear for the challenges and opportunities ahead and remind us of what we all stand for.
Our commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
We need to ensure the voices around our table better reflect and understand the communities we exist to serve. We strongly encourage individuals to apply who have a disability, impairment or health condition or individuals who identify as Black, Asian or from another minority ethnic background, as these groups are currently under-represented at Alzheimer's Society.
We want everyone we work with, as a colleague, volunteer, supporter, or someone we support, to feel included and that they belong at Alzheimer's Society.
Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy here along with our internal employee forum and Employee Lived Experience network groups help us promote inclusion and belonging, becoming an engaged and inclusive organisation for all our people.
Our hiring process
During your recruitment process we want to make sure that you bring your whole self and can be at your best. We are working hard to ensure our recruitment process is as inclusive as possible, so please do inform us of your experience and anything you think we could do better by completing our candidate survey when you apply. Please also contact Alzheimer's Society Talent Acquisition Team via careers@alzheimers.org.uk for application support or any adjustments you might need.
To ensure fairness and consistency to select the best candidate for this role, all our applications are anonymised up until an interview has been confirmed. We recognise the benefits of AI, but if you're considering using it to submit your application, we encourage you to reflect on the value it truly adds. AI tools often lack the personal touch and authenticity that set candidates apart. We want to hear your unique perspective, experiences, and skills, so we encourage you to showcase them in your own voice.
We try to avoid closing roles early where possible, however if we receive a high volume of applications, we may close earlier than the advertised closing date. Should this occur, we will aim to provide you with at least 48 hours' notice.
We are committed to safer recruitment and ensuring the welfare of those we work with, due to the nature of some of our roles, we might need to carry out a Criminal Record Check at the relevant level. You can read more information via our Website .
