The Plumber I, is responsible for planning and performing preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on plumbing systems. Maintains the inspection backflow preventer and boilers database. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. As Essential Personnel you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance Technicians are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, orientations, Convocation, Commencement, and CFAW, summer camps, amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
2. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Plumber Technician III/ Lead and/or Plumbing Supervisor.
3. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE ) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of the Plumber I, including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed boots with slip resistant soles, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
4. Responsible for wearing a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assigned jobs.
5. Working knowledge of all plumbing systems; ability to install, repair and maintain all types of plumbing systems.
6. Responsible for performing such tasks as unclogging, stopped up sinks, toilets and other plumbing fixtures.
7. Install various types of plumbing fixtures.
8. Follows direction from Master Plumber/ Supervisor.
9. Assemble pipe sections, tubing, and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
10. Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
11. Read blueprints and drawings to determine exact specifications and where plumbing system will be installed.
12. Keep records of assignments and produce detailed work reports.
13. Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passage holes, and fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels.
Determine water supply networks and waste drainage systems.
14. Coordinate with project manager on installation.
15. Install systems used to transport water, waste, gases, or liquids.
16. Ensure legislation and policies are met and that systems are up to code.
17. Ensure systems meet all standards of building codes and safety.
18. Cut openings in structures in preparation for pipes.
19. Select all materials needed for installation, including type and size of pipe.
20. Install supports and hangers for pipe, fixtures, and equipment.
21. Assemble and install valves and fittings.
22. Assemble pipe sections, tubing, and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment.
23. Installs other plumbing equipment, such as sinks, tubs, toilets, water heaters, air conditioners, appliances, and trim under Supervision.
24. Measure, cut, thread, and bend pipe to required angle.
25. Observe pressure gauges to fix leaks.
26. Test pipe systems and fix leaks.
27. Repair and maintain water treatment equipment.
28. Perform scheduled maintenance.
29. Ensure all installations, repairs and maintenance are properly sized, aligned, supported and grade.
30. Complies with all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and established work practices.
31. Ensures that all sites are cleaned after all work is performed throughout the completion any plumbing work performed.
32. Must follow safety procedures and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) as required while performing the job duties and responsibilities of a Plumber I.
33. Follow standard operating procedures when using tools and equipment such as hand tools & power tools. Properly care for and maintain shop equipment and tools.
34. Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks.
35. Completes other duties as assigned.
36. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks.
37. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies
This position requires a high school degree or GED . Minimum two years of plumbing service experience in commercial and/or residential plumbing service and repair or an equivalent combination of education and on the job experience. State Driver’s license, acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift-up to 75+ pounds and perform duties of the Plumbing trade in typical Virginia Climate. Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals. Urgency to grow and improve. Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.
The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits , including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
