Job Purpose
BorgWarner is seeking a Product Support Engineer (R&D) - Mechanical to support global manufacturing plants in the resolution of complex mechanical and thermomechanical production issues.
This role serves as the primary technical interface between manufacturing operations and Product Engineering for mechanical-related production concerns. The engineer will perform first-level engineering analysis, coordinate investigations, support containment actions, and drive robust corrective actions to improve long-term product and process reliability.
The successful candidate will work closely with manufacturing, design engineering, simulation, materials, and reliability teams to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Perform first-level engineering analysis of production issues following initial manufacturing and CPE investigations.
Serve as the primary engineering interface between manufacturing plants and Product Engineering teams.
Analyze issues involving: Mechanical integrity
Assembly variation
Structural robustness
Thermal and mechanical interfaces
Recommend containment actions and appropriate escalation paths for process, design, supplier, or mixed-origin issues.
Define, coordinate, and support Design of Experiments (DoE) to isolate mechanical contributors to failures.
Evaluate: Tolerance stack-ups
Mechanical interfaces
Assembly process sensitivities
Clamping forces
Fixture interactions
Support investigation of issues involving: Thermal Interface Materials (TIM)
Sealing systems
Mechanical deformation
Warpage
Fatigue mechanisms
Environmental durability
Collaborate with mechanical design engineers, materials specialists, simulation experts, reliability teams, and manufacturing engineers.
Evaluate impacts of supplier changes on mechanical performance, interface robustness, and long-term reliability.
Support root cause analyses using structured problem-solving methodologies and data-driven investigation techniques.
Document technical findings and communicate recommendations to global engineering and manufacturing teams.
Drive incorporation of lessons learned into design rules, assembly guidelines, DFMEAs, and engineering standards.
Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on product robustness and manufacturing efficiency.
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
3–8 years of experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing support, product development, or related disciplines.
Strong understanding of: Mechanical design principles
GD&T and tolerance analysis
Materials behavior
Manufacturing and assembly processes
Experience with root cause analysis, failure analysis, and structured problem-solving techniques.
Experience defining or supporting Design of Experiments (DoE).
Ability to translate engineering findings into practical design and manufacturing improvements.
Strong communication and collaboration skills…
