We’re partnering with a well-established, privately held company on an Assistant Controller opportunity within its Accounting & Finance organization. This is a particularly attractive role for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys being close to the numbers, wants meaningful ownership of the general ledger and month-end close, and is looking for a legitimate path into a Controller position.
This is a hands-on leadership role working closely with an accomplished Controller and CFO. The Assistant Controller will play a key role across month-end close, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, audit support, reconciliations, AP/AR oversight, accounting controls, and process improvement, while also gaining broader exposure across the accounting organization.
The company is intentionally keeping the background requirements broad. Experience within construction, engineering, contracting, or another project-oriented environment is helpful, but not required. Strong corporate accounting experience, excellent command of the GL, and the ability to operate calmly across a complex accounting environment are much more important.
For someone who wants to continue progressing beyond the Assistant Controller level, there is significant runway here. This position is being built with the expectation that the right person can develop into the organization’s future Controller.
Responsibilities:
Take a leadership role in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, rollforwards, supporting schedules, and variance analysis
Help own the integrity of the general ledger and ensure accounting activity is accurate, timely, and properly classified
Review accounting activity across areas including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, billing, payroll-related accounting, and other operating accounts
Prepare and review financial reporting schedules and provide support for management reporting
Coordinate audit requests, prepare supporting documentation, and work directly with external auditors
Review the work of accounting staff and help coordinate workflows, priorities, and close deadlines
Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Operations, project teams, payroll, and other departments to research and resolve accounting issues
Strengthen internal controls, reconciliations, accounting procedures, and close documentation
Build and improve Excel-based reporting, schedules, reconciliations, and analytical tools
Identify opportunities to automate manual accounting processes and improve the consistency and scalability of the accounting function
Gain broader exposure to payroll accounting, job-related accounting, WIP, and other areas of the business as experience develops
Work closely with the Controller on special projects and broader accounting initiatives
Qualifications:
Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
Progressive accounting experience, with flexibility depending on the depth of the candidate’s background
Strong hands-on experience owning or playing a major role in month-end close and general ledger accounting
Strong understanding of GAAP, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and accounting controls
Experience supporting or coordinating an external audit
Advanced Excel skills and the ability to analyze complex accounting information
CPA is preferred, but not required
Construction, engineering, project accounting, or related industry experience is a plus, but not required
