Where is the work:
Monday to Thursday, work onsite with your colleagues. Fridays, choose your work location, balancing what your work requires.
Within Sustaining Engineering, the Thermal Fluids Mechanical Engineer - LiquidStack Cooling Solutions applies heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics to support the performance, reliability, and serviceability of LiquidStack’s liquid cooling products, including coolant distribution units (CDUs). The role focuses on supporting released products, validating engineering changes, investigating performance issues, and contributing to the transition of new products into production and service. Assignments are performed within defined scope under moderate supervision, with guidance from senior engineers and engineering leadership.
What you will do:
Perform thermal and fluid calculations to evaluate heat removal capacity, heat exchanger performance, coolant flow, pressure losses, and pump operating conditions. Compare calculations with supplier data, product requirements, and measured performance.
Develop and execute test plans and procedures with engineering guidance. Evaluate product and component performance under steady operating conditions and changes in heat load, flow, and temperature.
Support laboratory test setup and instrumentation, including temperature, pressure, and flow measurements. Verify instrument calibration status and data quality and account for measurement uncertainty when interpreting results.
Investigate thermal and fluid performance issues identified through manufacturing, laboratory testing, or field operation. Work with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Global Services to reproduce problems, identify root causes, and verify corrective actions.
Evaluate alternate and replacement components, including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and sensors. Support qualification testing and assess effects on performance, operating limits, coolant and material compatibility, reliability, and serviceability.
Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers to evaluate temperature and flow regulation, pump operation, and system response to changing conditions.
Prepare clear calculations, test reports, technical recommendations, and supporting documentation for engineering changes. Contribute to updates to product specifications, test procedures, troubleshooting guidance, and service documentation.
Support new product design reviews and validation activities by providing input on thermal performance, testability, reliability, and service requirements.
Technical competencies for this role include:
Sound understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, with the ability to apply these principles to practical liquid cooling problems.
Ability to perform energy balances, evaluate flow and pressure relationships, and interpret heat exchanger performance data and pump curves. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and data acquisition, including the effects of sensor accuracy, calibration, and test conditions on results.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, component specifications, and technical test data. Ability to organize and analyze data using spreadsheets or engineering analysis tools, document…
